Traditional
(Major) Published Books
Full-length books of fiction and
general nonfiction are eligible. Collections of short
stories and collections of essays by one author are
eligible. Collected and selected poems by one author are
eligible. All books must be published in the United States.
Books must be published
between January 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008.
Submitted titles must have an ISBN and must have a
minimum of 48 bound pages, except in the case of
children’s books which must have a minimum of 24 pages.
Only book publishers may
submit titles for consideration,
although panel chairs can request books publishers have
not nominated.
The publisher
shall select the category for entering the work.
Entrants may enter in more than one category.
Entry forms must be postmarked no later than September
25, 2009.
Finalists shall be notified by an
Official Letter of Notification sent by the BPW Office
via 2-day registered, guaranteed delivery.
Books will not be returned but donated.
Selection of
Finalists
All entrants (author
name and book title) will be posted on the BPW Awards
website as submissions are received. Starting
October the elimination process will begin and those
books will be deleted . The top 3 finalist in each
category will be displayed on the website on October 15,
2009. The winners will be announced at the gala awards
ceremony on November 14th, in Atlanta, GA.
The judges reserve the right to switch the entry
to the appropriate category. They also reserve the
right to cancel a category if the number of entries is
insufficient, or to decide not to have a winner if the
level of the best entries is not up to Black Publishers
& Writers standards.
Any entry not conforming to the guidelines will
be disqualified without notice. There will be no refund
for disqualified entries.
Self Published
Books

university, small press, and self-publishers authors are
welcome to enter their books themselves.

Unpublished
Books
Entries must be unpublished. To qualify for an award,
entries must remain unpublished until awards are
announced.
Except for poems, all manuscripts must be double-spaced,
with 12-pitch characters and 1-inch margins on four
sides.
Title and page numbers must show on each page.
Unpublished Novels - first 25 pages PLUS a synopsis must
be submitted for the entry.
Manuscripts will not be returned.
